Yanks Disgracefully Drop Rainout Makeup vs. Mets

The Yankees played a makeup of a rainout against the Mets at Yankee Stadium II last night. The best starting pitcher in New York started for the Yankees, Luis Severino. And Jacob deGrom started for the Mets.

Actually, Severino hasn't been the best in the 2nd half of the season. This time, he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (but only 1 walk) over 4 innings, striking out 6. Sevy's dropoff is a major reason why the Yankees are unlikely to win the American League Eastern Division this season. A.J. Cole imploded in the 6th inning, allowing 3 more runs.

In contrast, deGrom, the most hard-luck pitcher in recent memory, pitched into the 7th, allowing only 3 runs, 2 of them earned, striking out 12. The Mets' bats and defense have cost him too many wins. Unfortunately, last night was not one of them. Miguel Andujar hit a home run, but the Yankees only got 6 other hits: A double by Brett Gardner, and singles by Aaron Hicks (2 of them), Didi Gregorius, Greg Bird and Austin Romine.

Mets 8, Yankees 5. WP: deGrom (7-7). SV: Robert Gsellman (7). LP: Severino (15-6, after starting out 14-1).

This is not the low point of the Yankees' season. That came at Fenway Park a few days ago. They are now 10 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East, 9 in the loss column. This is, however, the high point of the Mets' season, clinching a split of the Citi Series (not a "Subway Series," because it's not a World Series). They are 15 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, 15 in the loss column. If the New York teams were in the same Division, the Mets would be 24 games behind the Yankees, but only 23 in the loss column.
