The opener at Comerica Park saw the Tigers get to Luis Severino early, with a Nick Castellanos single and a Miguel Cabrera double, in the 1st inning. But he cruised the rest of the way, going 8 innings, allowing 2 runs, only 1 earned, on 4 hits and no walks, striking out 10.
He needed runs. He got them, starting with a home run by Gleyber Torres in the 3rd inning. Then came the top of the 4th. Here's what the Yankees did to Tiger starter Drew VerHagen: Home run by Greg Bird, single by Giancarlo Stanton, single by Didi Gregorius, RBI single by Miguel Andujar, RBI single by Clint Frazier, and home run by Austin Romine. Six runs before the Tigers even got an out.
Jonathan Holder was a little shaky in the 9th, allowing 2 runs, and Aaron Boone had to bring Aroldis Chapman in to slam the door. Yankees 7, Tigers 4. WP: Severino (9-1). SV: Chapman (14, and it should never have been a save situation). LP: VerHagen (0-2).
You gotta get run support. The Tigers got 4 runs in each game, losing the 1st, but winning the 2nd.
Yet again, Domingo German proved that he shouldn't have been moved from the bullpen to take the injured Jordan Montgomery's spot in the rotation. The Yankees got a home run from Stanton, but it wasn't enough. Tigers 4, Yankees 2. WP: Mike Fiers (5-3). SV: Shane Greene (15). LP: German (0-4).
