Opening Day. For baseball fans, a high holy day. And, for fans of most teams, to borrow the title of an old Christmas song, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Everybody starts equal, 0-0.
For most teams, it's all downhill from here.
The Mets opened the season away to the Washington Nationals, winning 5-1. At Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4. The St. Louis Cardinals opened at home by welcoming back Albert Pujols for his presumed last season, and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-0.
In their 1st regular-season game as the Cleveland Guardians, the team that had been the Indians for 107 years lost away to the Kansas City Royals, 3-1.
The Cincinnati Reds won away to the Atlanta Braves, 6-3. The Houston Astros won away to the Los Angeles Angels, 3-1. And the San Diego Padres opened on the road, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and not only lost a no-hitter in the 7th inning, but lost the game in the bottom of the 9th, 4-2, on a home run by Seth Beers.
Two games were postponed due to rain: Seattle Mariners at Minnesota Twins, and the Yankees at Yankee Stadium II against the Auld Enemy, the Boston Red Sox.
The rain has finally broken, it looks like it will be a spectacular day in The Bronx. First pitch is set for 1:05. Gerrit Cole starts for the Good Guys, and former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound for The Scum.
At last. PLAY BALL! And beat The Scum!
