"Die Hard" Is NOT a Christmas Movie!

This actually exists.
Someone actually thought he could
make a profit by making and selling this.
Maybe he did.

It's November. You know what that means. We prepare for the big family holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. And we start watching holiday season movies.

Let me explain something to you, people: Die Hard is not a Christmas movie!

You cannot have a Christmas movie if there is no snow. And Die Hard takes place in Los Angeles. No snow. Therefore, not a Christmas movie.

Yes, it takes place on December 24, Christmas Eve. Yes, there is a family reunion at the end. Yes, the good guys win in the end.

But there is not really a Christian message in it. There aren't really presents to speak of. And, most of all, there's no damn snow!

Does this mean that no movie that takes place in Los Angeles can ever be a Christmas movie? Sure, it can, as long as the action starts in Los Angeles, and then moves to a place where there is snow. There are plenty of snow-capped mountains in California, and the movie can move to one of those places.

But not Los Angeles itself. I don't care if Santa Claus is driving his sleigh down Sunset Boulevard, with Ralphie Parker riding shotgun with his Red Ryder BB gun, with Jesus and child Natalie Wood in the back seat: If there is no snow, it's not a Christmas movie! Get that through your head!

The Christmas when people do get that through their heads will be the best Christmas ever!

Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. If it is, then so are The Thin Man, Meet Me In St. Louis, The Apartment, The French Connection, The Godfather, Three Days of the Condor, Trading Places, Gremlins, Running Scared, Steel Magnolias, Goodfellas, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, The Long Kiss Goodnight, L.A. Confidential, and Shazam! You could add most versions of Little Women.

All those movies take place at least partly during the Christmas season. Most of them have men dressed in Santa Claus suits. With the obvious exception of L.A. Confidential, all of them have snow. And those are all better movies than Die Hard.

I will not die on this hill. But I will knock a sucker off it.

Don't worry: Not even I am arrogant enough to suggest that Rocky IV, Lethal Weapon, or Invasion U.S.A. -- or any Chuck Norris movie, for that matter -- is a better movie than Die Hard.

Chances of a White Christmas

Central Park, New York

According to current weather forecasts, we might get snow on December 25.

Christmastime is the one time of the year we like to see snow -- that is, those of us too old to have snowfall cancel school.

But New York City and my part of New Jersey are too far south to have significant snowfalls until the New Year. Granted, we've had snow before Halloween a couple of times. We've also had snow on Thanksgiving Day twice, including an actual football-game-canceling blizzard in 1989. But we usually don't get our first significant snowfall -- say, more than an inch -- until January.

I can only remember snow being on the ground on December 25 about 5 or 6 times in my 52 years. Usually, it tries, but it's too warm, and it rains instead. Not a White Christmas, but a Wet Christmas. Yuck.

Note: These totals represent 1 inch or more of snow on the ground, regardless of whether it fell on December 24 or 25, or earlier:

Minneapolis: 95 times since 1899, or about 7 out of every 10 years
Buffalo: 90 times since 1871, or 3 out of 5
Cleveland: 28 times since 1969, or 3 out of 5
Milwaukee: 58 times since 1900, or 1 out of 2
Detroit: 54 times since 1900, or 2 out of 5
Chicago: 63 times since 1871, or 2 out of 5
Denver: 45 times since 1899, or 3 out of 8
Pittsburgh: 50 times since 1871, or 1 out of 3
Boston: 28 times since 1872, or 1 out of 5
New York: 18 times since 1912, or 1 out of 6
Cincinnati: 16 times since 1916, or 1 out of 6
Philadelphia: 9 times since 1940, or 1 out of 8
Baltimore: 12 times since 1872, or 1 out of 12
Washington: 9 times since 1884, or 1 out of 15
Seattle: 8 times since 1891, or 1 out of 17

In other words: Minneapolis, 70 percent; Buffalo and Cleveland, 60; Milwaukee, 50; Detroit and Chicago, 40; Denver, 37; Pittsburgh, 33; Boston, 20; Mew York and Cincinnati, 17; Philadelphia, 12; Baltimore, 8; Washington, 7; Seattle, 6; anything south of the Potomac and Ohio Rivers, forget it.

I have to admit: Given how far north it is, Seattle surprised me, although they are one of the more recent cities with one:

Last "White Christmas" up to and including 2020:
Detroit: 2018
Buffalo: 2018
Minneapolis: 2018
Pittsburgh: 2017
Denver: 2017
Seattle: 2017
Chicago: 2013
Milwaukee: 2011
New York: 2010
Cleveland: 2010
Cincinnati: 2010
Detroit: 2010
Philadelphia: 2009
Boston: 2009
Baltimore: 2002
Washington: 2002

Some cities haven't seen snow at all in a long time:

Houston: February 15, 2021 (Earlier this year, so not that long)
St. Louis: January 11, 2020
Atlanta: January 17, 2018
Dallas: December 6, 2013
Los Angeles: January 17, 2007
Phoenix: December 6, 1998
Tampa: January 19, 1977
Miami: Also on January 19, 1977
San Francisco: February 6, 1976
San Diego: December 13, 1967

I was a little surprised by San Francisco, since Northern California has mountains. But, at 37.5 degrees North latitude, it's further south than D.C., so not having snow since the Ford Administration makes some sense.

The Weather Outside Was Frightful

Oh, the weather outside was frightful.
The manager is not so insightful.
Since Opening Day's a no-go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

The home opener is postponed until 4:05 PM tomorrow. All tickets for today's game will be honored tomorrow.

*

Hours until the Yankees' home opener: 22.

Hours until the New York Red Bulls play again: 25, tomorrow night, in the Semifinal of the CONCACAF Champions League, against Club Deportivo Guadalajara, a.k.a. "Chivas," at Estadio Chivas, in Jalisco, outside Guadalajara, Mexico. The return leg will be the following Tuesday night, at Red Bull Arena.

Hours until the New Jersey Devils next play a local rival: 25, tomorrow night, at the Prudential Center, against the New York Rangers. With the regular season coming to a close, this will be the last game against a geographic rival until next season, unless, as remains possible, they face the Philadelphia Flyers during the Playoffs.

Days until The Arsenal play again, 3, this Thursday at 2:45 PM our time, in the 1st leg of the Quarterfinal of the UEFA Europa League, against play Russian club CSKA Moscow, the club whose sports teams were once sponsored by the Soviet Red Army. Arsenal beat Stoke City 3-0 yesterday.

Days until the next Yankees-Red Sox series begins: 8, a week from tomorrow, at Fenway Park.

Days until the Red Bulls next play a "derby": 33, on Saturday afternoon, May 5, home to New York City FC. Their 1st game against the Philadelphia Union will be on Saturday night, May 26, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison. Their 1st game against the New England Revolution will be on Saturday night, June 2, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Their 1st game against D.C. United, and their 1st game ever at the new Audi Field, will be on Wednesday night, July 25.

Days until the U.S. national soccer team plays again: 54, a "friendly" against Bolivia, at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania, home of the Philadelphia Union, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. After the Bolivia game, there will be a trip to Europe, to play Ireland in Dublin on June 2, and France in Lyon on June 9. These 3 games should have been warmups for the World Cup. Alas...

Days until the next World Cup kicks off in Russia: 73, on June 14. A little over 10 weeks. But the U.S. team won't be playing. At least now, Donald Trump doesn't have to choose, and can root for his favorite country, the host nation, Russia.

Days until the 2018 trading deadline, after which we won't have to fear Yankee general manager Brian Cashman trading any proven good players for "prospects": 120, on Tuesday, July 31. A little under 4 months.

Days until the next North London Derby (after this one): Unknown, but not until next season. The Premier League season opener will be on Saturday, August 11, but you never see a derby on the opening weekend. So, more than 131 days.

Days until September 2018 roster call-ups, when we can finally start to expect seeing most of these wonderful "prospects" that Yankee general manager Brian Cashman wanted: 152. Just 5 months.

Days until Rutgers University plays football again: 152, on Saturday, September 1, home to Texas State University.

Days until East Brunswick High School plays football again: Unknown. The 2018 schedule hasn't been released yet. But the season opener is usually on the 1st Friday in September. that would be September 7, which is 163 days from now.

Days until the next Congressional election, when we can elect a Democratic Congress that can impeach and remove Donald Trump from the Presidency: 218, on November 6. A little over 7 months.

Days until the next Rutgers-Penn State game: 229, on Saturday, November 17, at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Days until the next East Brunswick-Old Bridge Thanksgiving high school football game: 234, on Thursday, November 22. A little over 8 months.

Days until a Democratic Congress can convene, and the impeachment process can begin: 277, on Thursday, January 3, 2019. Just 10 months.

Days until the Baseball Hall of Fame vote is announced, electing Mariano Rivera: 297
, on January 23, 2019. A little over 10 months.

Days until the next Women's World Cup kicks off: 432, on June 7, 2019, in France. A little over a year, or a little over 14 months. The U.S. team, as 3-time and defending Champions, has, as usual, a better chance than the men's team would have had in 2018 anyway.

Days until my 50th Birthday, at which point I can join AARP and get discounts for travel and game tickets: 627, on December 18, 2019. Under 2 years, or a little over 20 months.

Days until the Baseball Hall of Fame vote is announced, electing Derek Jeter: 662
, on January 22, 2020. A little under 2 years, or a little under 22 months.

Days until the next Summer Olympics begins in Tokyo, Japan: 846, on July 24, 2020. Under 2 1/2 years, or a little under 28 months.

Days until the next Presidential election, when we can dump the Trump-Pence regime and elect a real Administration: 949
, on November 3, 2020. A little over 2 1/2 years, or just 31 months.

Days until Liberation Day: 1,027, at noon on January 20, 2021. Under 3 years, or a little under 34 months. Note that this is liberation from the Republican Party, not just from Donald Trump. Having Mike Pence as President wouldn't be better, just differently bad, mixing theocracy with plutocracy, rather than mixing kleptocracy with plutocracy.

Days until the next Winter Olympics (after the current one in Pyeongchang, Korea) begins in Beijing, China: 1,404, on February 4, 2022. Under 4 years, or a little over 46 months.

Days until the next World Cup for which the American team will be eligible is scheduled to kick off: 1,699, on November 21, 2022, in Qatar. Under 5 years, or under 56 months. The charges of corruption against Qatar may yet mean that they will lose the tournament, in which case it will be moved to a nation where it would not be too hot to play it in June and July.

Devils Going to Hell In a Handbasket; Enzo Bearzot, 1927-2010

Let me get my thoughts on the blizzard out of the way: We got 17 inches where I live, and other areas got more. Elizabeth, New Jersey was the "winner" in the New York Tri-State Area with 31 inches -- which tops the 30 inches that set a record for me on January 6-8, 1996 -- and Toms River topped the Philadelphia metro area (even though it, sort of, belongs to both areas) with 28 inches. Cape May got 26.

It was nice to see Mayor Mike shoveling a citizen's driveway on the news. But it was Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York doesn't even seem to be aware that there are FIVE Boroughs. Mayor Moneybags can't be bothered to attend to an actual emergency, while Mayor Nutter -- not aptly named -- literally too matters into his own hands!

As for my own town, a lot of side streets, including mine, remain inadequately plowed. I swear, what's the point in voting for Democrats if they're going to care as little as the Republicans do?

*

Tonight, the New Jersey Devils host The Scum, a.k.a. the Manhattan Muggers, a.k.a. the Broadway Boozehounds, a.k.a. the New York Rangers, at the Prudential Center in Newark.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but I hate the fucking Rangers.

Right now, the Devils rank 30th out of the NHL's 30 teams with just 20 points. Dead last. The pathetic New York Islanders are 29th, so they're not quite as pathetic. The Rangers rank 10th.

The Devils have lost 9 of their last 10. They are just 5-12 at home. (I'm counting an overtime or shootout loss as a loss, even though you still get 1 team point for it.)

The Devils can be summed up in 2 letters: P.U.! This is the worst Devils team since 1987, when Alain Chevrier was the main goalie, and the top 3 scorers were Aaron Broten, "Captain Kirk" Muller and... John MacLean. To borrow a line from a movie about another sport, "What are these boys thinkin' about? 'Cause it sho' ain't hockey!"

Last Thursday, John MacLean was fired as Devils head coach. After waiting for years to get this chance, including winning a minor-league title and serving as a Devils assistant, he lasted just 33 games.

As The Who would say, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Jacques Lemaire, who coached the Devils from 1993 to 1997, including the 1995 Stanley Cup, and coached them last season as well before "retiring" (that may have been his intention at the time), has been installed for the rest of this season.

One of the greatest players of his era, scorer of 366 goals in the regular season and another 61 in the Playoffs (including an overtime winner that clinched the 1977 Stanley Cup, though it was a sweep), winner of 8 Stanley Cups from 1968 to 1979 with the Montreal Canadiens, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame before his 40th birthday, the man who turned the Devils from pretenders to contenders to champions, and the man who turned the Minnesota Wild from an expansion franchise to a Western Conference Finalist in just 3 seasons, Lemaire is now 65 years old, and he looks it.

Brought in as his assistant is Larry Robinson, his former Canadiens teammate, one of the best defensemen who ever lived. Robinson was his assistant on the 1995 Cup, coached the Devils to the 2000 Cup, and assisted him again last season. (Sadly, with the recent death of Pat Burns, a reunion of all 3 Devils Cup-winning coaches is no longer possible.)

To be totally fair, I'm sorry for Johnny Mac, who finally got his chance to be an NHL head coach and deserved better than to run into an absolute buzzsaw.

There's the injuries. Martin Brodeur had an elbow injury, although he's back. And Zach Parise, who has a chance to become the greatest offensive player in team's history -- assuming he doesn't get hurt again, and he doesn't get let go in yet another salary dump, he should surpass MacLean's team record of 374 career goals in 2017 or so -- has been hurt all year, and may not come back at all this season. MacLean has already dressed 33 different players, 9 of whom made their NHL debuts this season.

And speaking of salary dumps, there's also the matter of general manager Lou Lamoriello, who seems to be following the Charlie Finley model: Bald and cheap. You could make a pretty good starting lineup out of players the Devils let go just since the 2004-05 lockout: Center, Scott Gomez or John Madden; right wing, Brian Gionta; left wing, Sergei Brylin (still playing in the Russian league); defensemen, Brian Rafalski and Brad Lukowich; goaltender, Scott Clemmensen. Then there's the cheapies that Lou Lam has NOT gotten rid of, the Colin Whites, the Sheldon Brookbanks, the Dainius Zubruses.

Ilya Kovalchuk got a lot of money? Doesn't mean there's nothing left to spend on anybody else. You know, Jeff Vanderbeek is not crying poverty.

Of course, there is the matter of the salary cap, the result of which is that Kovalchuk's contract had to be seriously restructured so he could get all that money and not have all of it counted against the cap.

Still, Lamoriello has let too many good players go, and not gotten players good enough to replace them.

For a few years, the Devils were resembling the Atlanta Braves. Well, guess what: Division Titles are not enough.

The Devils are starting to more closely resemble Arsenal. Same red shirts, same weak passing, same fear to get off a good shot, same laziness. Same willingness to go just so far (Playoffs for the Devils, 4th place or higher and thus guaranteeing UEFA Champions League play for the following season for Arsenal), and not willing to take a risk to go for it all.

Except I can't say THAT anymore, either: On Monday, Arsenal beat Chelsea! They go into tonight's game against Wigan on a tremendous high. They will go into the New Year no worse than 3rd in the Premier League, and still alive in all 3 cup competitions (FA Cup, Carling Cup, Champions League).

Besides, Arsene Wenger still has all his hair. It's all white, but it's still all there. Lamoriello? I don't know what's going on in that geodesic dome of his.

UPDATE: Devils blew a 1-0 lead and lost to The Scum, 2-1.

*

However, as long as we're being totally fair, John MacLean he took the hand he was dealt and played it very poorly. So, in spite of MacLean facing the old line, "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it," I say... Thank you, Santa!

Maybe we can make it up to him by trading Jamie Langenbrunner, assigning the Captaincy to someone more deserving, and retire Number 15 for MacLean.

Come on, Jacques Lemaire, get this team going again. Remember the pride you and your teammates felt in Montreal. Remember the pride you built in this team in the Meadowlands era. Bring it back in Newark.

Enzo Bearzot died last week. A native of Aiello del Friuli near Udine, Italy, he became a star soccer defender, playing for several teams from 1946 to 1964, including Internazionale of Milan and Torino of Turin. He played 1 game for the Italian national team, in 1955.

He went into management, and in 1975 was named manager of the national team. He got them to 4th place in both the 1978 World Cup and Euro 1980. After poor performances in their 1st 3 matches of the 1982 World Cup in Spain, he ordered Silenzio Stampa -- media silence, not talking to the press.

It worked, as a team led by Juventus (the main team in Turin) stars Dino Zoff, Gateano Scirea, Claudio Gentile, Antonio Cabrini, Marco Tardelli, and the hero of heroes, Paolo Rossi, knocked out defending Champion Argentina, a much-hyped Brazil squad, Poland in the Semifinal, and West Germany in the Final.
Italy didn't qualify for Euro 1984, and crashed out of the 1986 World Cup in the Round of 16. Bearzot faced criticism for relying on the older players (not the first time an Italy manager would be so criticized, nor the last), and he resigned in disgust. Still, his 104 matches are the most of any Italy manager. He died last week at age 83.

Hours until the Devils play another local rival: 9, tonight, against the Rangers at the Prudential Center. Next game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Saturday, January 8 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly. Next game against the Islanders, Monday, January 17, at the Nassau Coliseum.

Days until the next North London Derby: 59, Saturday, February 26, at White Hart Lane. Under 2 months.

Days until the next Yankees-Red Sox series begins: 100, Friday, April 8, 2011, at Fenway Park.

Days until Derek Jeter collects his 3,000th career hit: 178. Under 6 months. (estimated: June 14, 2011)

Days until Rutgers plays football again: 246, on Saturday, September 3, although nothing else is known. Apparently the Big East Conference hasn’t set its conference schedule for 2011, meaning only 4 nonconference games are yet set: At North Carolina on September 10, home to Ohio University (thank God it’s not Ohio State) on September 24, home to Navy on October 15, and against Army at the new Yankee Stadium on November 12. In fact, aside from the Yankee Stadium date, every date is in flux, due to the whims of the TV networks: September 3, 10, 17 and 24; October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; November 5, 19 and 26; and December 3.

Days until East Brunswick High School plays football again: 252, on Friday night, September 9, 2011, and the opponent and location are TBD.

Days until the Rutgers-Army football game at Yankee Stadium: 319.

Days until the next East Brunswick-Old Bridge Thanksgiving clash: 330.

Days until the last Nets game in New Jersey: 481 (estimated).

Days until the 2012 Olympics begin in London: 537.

Days until Alex Rodriguez collects his 3,000th career hit: 885 (estimated).

Days until Alex Rodriguez hits his 700th career home run: 1,007 (estimated).

Days until Super Bowl XLVIII at the Meadowlands: 1,132.

Days until Alex Rodriguez hits his 756th career home run to surpass all-time leader Hank Aaron: 1,627 (estimated).

Days until Alex Rodriguez hits his 763rd career home run to become as close to a "real" all-time leader as we are likely to have: 1,741 (estimated).
