Yesterday, the Yankees' win over the Mets, and the San Diego Padres' win over the San Francisco Giants, eliminated the Mets from the possibility that they could make the Playoffs in the 2026 Major League Baseball season, in spite of having the biggest payroll to start the season -- the 2nd-biggest as the season approaches its conclusion.
In 1953, the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee. Their fans didn't give up watching baseball, they just switched to the Red Sox. In 1954, the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. Their fans didn't give up watching baseball, they just switched to the Cardinals. In 1955, the Philadelphia Athletics moved to Kansas City. Their fans didn't give up watching baseball, they just switched to the Phillies.
But when the Giants and the Dodgers moved after the 1957 season, their fans acted like New York was without baseball. They decided they would rather give up baseball entirely rather than root for the Yankees. Then, offered the choice of either the Yankees or a brand-new expansion team that would stink for the first few years, they chose to stink. As if that gave them any moral high ground.
It didn't. The Mets exist solely to provide an alternative to the greatest franchise in the history of sports. Their entire existence is based on immaturity and stupidity.
And, in 2000, the Yankees made Met fans pay for that choice.
