Few things feel worse than soggy socks. Last night, the Yankees played the Wet Sox in Chicago, and had the game first delayed 45 minutes, then cut short after the top of the 7th inning.
The beginning was a "radar delay." If they'd just started on time and taken their chances, they probably would have gotten the full 9 in.
Phil Hughes pitched for as long as the game lasted, 6 innings, 3 hits, no walks (I love it), and no runs (I really love it). He advanced to 2-3, and brought his ERA down to a still-unsightly 6.93.
The Yankees hit ChiSox starter John Danks hard, dropping him to 4-9. Russell Martin hit his 11th homer of the season -- an appropriate tribute from the current Yankee catcher, on the anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson. (32 years -- wow, he's now been dead almost as long as he was alive.)
Mark Teixeira hit home runs from both sides of the plate, the 12th time he's done that -- breaking the record of Eddie Murray, who broke the record of Mickey Mantle. (Teix 12, Murray 11, the Mick 10.) Teix now has 31 homers, 1 short of the American League lead, behind Jose "Test Me For Steroids and Check My Bat For Cork" Bautista.
Yankees 6, White Sox 0. That's 5 wins in a row for the Yankees. They remain a game behind The Scum, and have 2 more against the Pale Hose before heading to Boston for a major showdown.
Tonight, A.J. Burnett goes against Gavin Floyd, whom I saw pitch for the Lakewood BlueClaws.
The Mets? Threw away a 3-2 9th inning lead at home against the Florida Marlins, and Johan Santana was scratched from a minor-league rehab start. The only good news coming from Flushing Meadow is an apparent major improvement in the condition of Hall-of-Famer Gary Carter -- but then, we Yankee Fans thought we were getting improvements like that from Bobby Murcer, who had the same condition.
