The Yankees made a rare visit to Pittsburgh last night. The Pirates hosted Bill Mazeroski Gold Glove Bobblehead Night, probably to remind Yankee Fans of Mazeroski's other achievement, his home run that beat the Yankees in the 1960 World Series.
Yankee Fans countered that by outnumbering Pirate fans inside PNC Park. The Pirates countered that by winning the game.
Jameson Taillon, a former Pirate, started for the Yankees, and gave up 5 runs in 5 1/3rd innings. Lucas Luetge got to the end of the 7th without any further damage. And Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect 8th. Sure, with no pressure on him.
But the Yankees didn't hit. They got an RBI single from Aaron Judge in the 5th, and another from Matt Carpenter in the 8th. But that was it. They hit a lot of hard drives, but they all seemed to be right at one Pirate fielder or another. It was like having 9 Mazeroskis. (Which has some appropriateness, as Mazeroski wore Number 9, and the Pirates have retired it.) I can't even cite Roberto Clemente's great arm in right field, because the Yankees didn't even get that far.
Pirates 5, Yankees 2. WP: José Quintana (2-4). SV: David Bednar (13). LP: Taillon (9-2).
The brief series concludes tonight. Luis Severino starts against Mitch Keller. Then, it's on to Boston to face The Scum.
Injury report: Anthony Rizzo (back) is day-to-day; Domingo Germán (shoulder) is now rehabbing with Class AA Somerset, and could be back at the major league level after the All-Star Break; Jonathan Loáisiga (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment on Saturday, and could be back by the end of the month; Ron Marinaccio (shoulder) could also be back by the end of the month; Zack Britton (elbow) will resume tossing on Sunday, and the team thinks he could return in September; and Chad Green (elbow) had Tommy John surgery, and will probably be out until at least next season's All-Star Break.
