Washout In Washington

I've seen an entire week of Yankee games wiped out by snow. It was the start of the 1982 season. But I've never seen an entire Yankee series wiped out by rain.

The Yankees were supposed to begin a 2-game series away to the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. They started the game, and it didn't start out well, as Masahiro Tanaka allowed yet another 1st inning home run, and then 2 more runs in the 2nd.

The Yankees came back, though, with a 2-run home run by Tyler Austin in the 4th inning. Austin hit a sacrifice fly to bring another run home in the 5th, tying the game at 3-3. But it was already raining, and after the top of the 6th was played, the umpires suspended the game.

There was supposed to be a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday, but there was no chance to get the games in: Both were postponed. And they couldn't be played on Thursday (an intended travel day), either. To sum up: 2 games planned, 5 1/2 innings played, no results.

They will be played on what had been an off-day for both teams, Monday, June 18, starting at 5:05 PM.

So now, the Yankees fly out to Kansas City, always a tough place for them to play since the establishment of the Royals in 1969.

I hope, at the least, that the weather will be good.
