Coming into last night's series opener with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, the 2023 Yankees were 32-8 when scoring at least 4 runs.
At the little green pinball machine in the Back Bay, 4 runs are rarely enough. They certainly weren't last night.
Domingo Germán started for the Bronx outfit, and to say that he had nothing would be overkind. He allowed 7 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks -- in just 2 innings. One of those hits was a home run by Justin Turner. After Germán left the game in the 3rd, Turner hit a 2nd homer off Matt Krook. First, last weekend, Turner hits Yankee broadcaster John Sterling in the head with a foul ball back to the press box, now this.
A bit less sloppy than Germán, but ending up as the winning pitcher, was Joe Jacques. Born in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey, he is a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School and Manhattan College, which means he could have grown up as a Yankee Fan. But against these Yankees, he got his 1st major league win.
To paraphrase the old nursery rhyme: "Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques, gagnez-vous? Gagnez-vous?" (Brother James, do you win? Unfortunately for us, the answer is, "Oui.")
Pretty much the only highlight for the Yankees was a home run by Josh Donaldson in the 8th inning. By then, however, the game was long out of hand. Red Sox 15, Yankees 5. WP: Joe Jacques (1-0). No save. LP: Germán (4-4).
The series continues tonight, a 7:15 start, on Fox. Clarke Schmidt starts against Bryan Bello.
