The Yankees came home to start a brief 5-game homestand, after not really hitting for a week. And the 1st game of that homestand was against the Los Angeles Angels, with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, and would be started by Jordan Montgomery, who gets hardly any run support. This had all the makings of a 2-0 Yankee loss.
Sometimes, the makings don't make it. Over the 1st 6 1/3rd innings, Montgomery allowed no runs on 3 hits and 1 walk. And he got the runs, 4 of them in the 1st inning, including a home run by new acquisition Matt Carpenter, chasing former Met Noah "Thor" Syndergaard. He got another run in the 5th, and 2 more in the 6th.
But in the 7th, Montgomery gave up a home run to Luis Rengifo. He was allowed to finish the inning. Miguel Castro started the top of the 8th with men on 1st and 3rd with no outs, but got great fielding to get out of it. Jose Trevino hit a home run in the bottom of the 8th. New acquisition David McKay was a little shaky in the 9th, but no runs.
And for those of you ripping Joey Gallo, he went 2-for-3 with a walk, although his 1 out was a strikeout.
Yankees 9, Angels 1. WP: Montgomery (1-1). No save. LP: Syndergaard (4-3).
The Tampa Bay Rays lost last night, and were leapfrogged by the Toronto Blue Jays: The Yankees closed out the month of May leading the American League Eastern Division by 5 1/2 games over the Jays, and 6 over the Rays.
The brief series with the Angels concludes tonight. Nestor Cortes stars against Reid Detmers.
