Yanks Hit Rock Bottom In Labor Day Loss to Jays

Last night, on Twitter, somebody said that the Yankees' recent 13-game winning streak now seems like 5 years ago. He's right.

The Yankees began a 4-game home series with those pesky Toronto Blue Jays with a Labor Day matinee. (The days of holiday doubleheaders are long gone, now that there are ways other than simple gate receipts and player sales for baseball teams to make money.)

Jameson Taillon started, and he didn't pitch badly, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs. But 2 came in the 1st inning, on back-to-back home runs by Marcus Semien and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. After that, the Yankees never looked like winning. They got only 7 baserunners: 5 singles and 2 errors.

Lucas Luetge pitched the 8th inning, and kept it 3-0 Toronto. But, for reasons known only to Brian Cashman (and, possibly, also to Aaron Boone), Brooks Kriskie was brought in to pitch the 9th, and he allowed home run, walk, walk, strikeout, popup, bases-loading walk, grand slam, single, popup. The boos came down harder than the rains of Hurricane Ida, and they were not so much for Kriskie as for Boone, and possibly for Cashman.

Blue Jays 8, Yankees 0. WP: Hyun Jin Ryu. No save. LP: Taillon (8-6). With 25 games to play, the Yankees are 8 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Eastern Division, and barely lead the Wild Card race.

The series continues tonight, with Gerrit Cole pitching against former Met Steven Matz. The online jokes have begun: Cole will pitch 8 innings, allow 1 unearned run, and then the bullpen will come in for the 9th inning, and the Yankees will lose 10-0.

Kriskie and Andrew Heaney are on the Yankees' major league roster. Luis Gil and Deivi Garcia are not. Gleyber Torres is still playing shortstop. Explain to me why Brian Cashman still has a job.

Days until the next game of the U.S. National Soccer Team: 1, tomorrow night, at 10:30 PM Eastern Time, against El Salvador, in San Pedro Sula.

Days until the next East Brunswick High School football game: 3, this Friday, at 7:00 PM, away to New Brunswick. And I just found out that the artificial turf field at Jay Doyle Field has to be replaced, so Da Bears will play all their "home" games this season at arch-rival Old Bridge. That is disgraceful.

Days until the next Arsenal game: 4, this Saturday, 10:00 AM U.S. Eastern Time, home to Norfolk team Norwich City. Maybe the Arsenal will actually score a goal against this newly-promoted team at home.

Days until the next Rutgers University football game: 4, this Saturday, at 2:00 PM, away to Syracuse University. Alas, this is no longer a Big East Conference game, as RU are now in the Big Ten and 'Cuse are now in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Days until the next New York Red Bulls game: 4, on Saturday night, at 7:00 PM, home to arch-rival D.C. United.

Days until the Red Bulls again play a nearby rival: See the previous answer.

Days until the next North London Derby: 19, on Sunday, September 26, at 11:30 AM, at the Emirates Stadium. TV programming moved the game from the day before. Under 6 weeks. So the Yankees and The Arsenal will both be playing their arch-rivals on the same day.

Days until the New Jersey Devils play another regular-season game: 38, on Friday, October 15, home to the Chicago Blackhawks. Under 2 months.

Days until the New Jersey Devils again play a local rival: 51, on Thursday, October 28, home to the New York Rangers.

Days until the next election for Governor of New Jersey and Mayor of New York City: 56, on Tuesday, November 2. Exactly 8 weeks.

Days until the next Rutgers-Penn State football game: 74, on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, November 20, at 12:00 noon, at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania. Under 11 weeks.

Days until the 1st Baseball Hall of Fame election for which Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz will be eligible, and we will know for sure whether steroid use keeps a player out, or if it's only perception that does: 140, on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Under 5 months.

Days until the next Winter Olympics open in Beijing, China: 150, on Friday, February 4, 2022. Under 5 months.

Days until the next East Brunswick-Old Bridge football game: 367, on September 9, 2022, hopefully at home at Jay Doyle Field. Almost exactly 1 year.

Days until the next elections for Congress and for Governor of most States, including New York and Pennsylvania: 427, on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Under a year and a half, or about 14 months.
