They're all must-win games now, regardless of the opponent. And, of course, you always want to beat the Boston Red Sox.
Gerrit Cole pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball at Fenway Park, and got the kind of support that Jordan Montgomery can only dream of. And they got it off former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi, too. DJ LeMahieu led off the game with a single, Anthony Rizzo followed with another, Aaron Judge doubled DJ home, Giancarlo Stanton hit a grounder that got Rizzo home, Joe Gallo flew out, and Gleyber Torres singled home Judge. It was 3-0 Yankees before Cole even took the mound.
Rizzo led off the 3rd with a double, Judge drew a walk, and then Stanton went against type: Instead of aiming for that nice close left field wall, the righthanded slugger hit one out to the opposite field. 6-0 Yankees. They got a 7th run when Gallo singled, Brett Gardner walked, and Kyle Higashioka singled Gallo home.
Cole tired in the bottom of the 6th, allowing 2 singles and a home run to Rafael Devers. But Torres led off the 7th with a drive to center that bounced off a bleacher fan's outstretched hand. It was ruled a home run. Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta and Chad Green wrapped the game up.
Yankees 8, Red Sox 3. WP: Cole (16-8). No save. LP: Eovaldi (10-9).
