Following Monday night's Cashman-enforced bottlejob away to the Houston Astros, Aaron Boone sent Jonathan Loaisiga out to start. Loaisiga is a reliever, not a starter. But Boone had no choice, because Cashman still refuses to plug the holes in the rotation caused by the injuries to CC Sabathia (who could be pitching again as soon as this Saturday) and Luis Severino (who had an injury setback, and I wouldn't expect to see him before Memorial Day weekend).
Loaisiga only lasted 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Astro starter Gerrit Cole went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs. But neither one would be his team's pitcher of record.
Luke Voit got things started with a home run in the 1st inning, but it was 3-1 Astros going into the top of the 6th. But Brett Gardner and Voit got on base, and Gary Sanchez doubled them home to tie the game.
By this point, Boone had also used Stephen Tarpley, Luis Cessa and Jonathan Holder. Holder got into trouble in the bottom of the 7th, and Chad Green couldn't get out of it. He allowed the go-ahead runs on doubles by Michael Brantley and George Springer.
Astros 6, Yankees 3. WP: Hector Rondon (1-0). SV: Roberto Osuna (4). LP: Green (0-2).
The Yankees are now 5-6, 3 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Cashman's refusal to plug the rotation holes is probably responsible for half of those losses.
We can't blame the bullpen for the loss, because we didn't have an available starter. This is a Cashman loss all the way.
Blaming Boone for the Yankees being 5-6 is like blaming the death of JFK on the limo driver.
The series concludes tonight. James Paxton (the only new starter Cashman got) starts against Collin McHugh. Then, a much-needed day off, and then home to the Chicago White Sox.
