Today, Phil Hughes' pitching was a relief. Though not in relief.
Possibly pitching for his place in the starting rotation, Hughes (2-4) got into the 7th inning in today's finale of a 4-game series with the Kansas City Royals, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and just 1 walk.
Boone Logan finished off the 7th -- trusted with a 4-run lead, he held it. Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless 8th, and Cory Wade pitched the 9th, allowing only 1 run.
K.C. starter Luke Hochevar was neither so lucky, nor so good (2-3). Tied 1-1 in the top of the 3rd, the Yankees exploded for 6 runs. Dewayne Wise led off with a single to right. Derek Jeter beat out a bunt single. (He's now batting .397.) Curtis Granderson singled home Wise. Hochevar, certainly not wanting to, hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch. That loaded the bases with nobody out.
Robinson Cano hit a grand slam to right-center field, his 2nd home run of the season. Hochevar finally got an out, getting Mark Teixeira to fly to right. But Nick Swisher put the exclamation point over the fence in right field, his 7th homer.
A-Rod added his 4th homer of the season (633rd of his career) in the 8th. He now nees 67 homers for 700, and 130 to become the all-time leader. He has 2,801 hits, 199 away from 3,000.
Yankees 10, Royals 4. The series is split. Not good enough, but it could have been considerably worse.
The Yankees come home, have tomorrow off, and start a 3-game home series against the 1st-place Tampa Bay Rays. Anything less than 2 out of 3 is unacceptable.
