I found that the team was called the Yankees in April 1904 in the New York Evening Journal. The Evening Journal was first with the baseball scores. The first headline was when they left spring training: "Yankees return from South." My work is in Paul Dickson's Baseball Dictionary. Wikipedia (where I do not edit) credits Jim Price of New York Press, but I checked and this is completely wrong.
